When it comes to handicap accessible bathrooms we’re always careful to not offer cookie-cutter solutions to our clients. The fact is the amount of space that you have in your home could vary and the specific needs that a handicapped or older person could have vary. Therefore, it’s very important for us to follow health and safety guidelines for this type of project. Yet also take into account the particular needs that each client could have. Furthermore, you don’t necessarily need to be legally handicapped or anything like that to want to make your shower and other bathroom fixtures safer.  

Adapting The Full Bathroom

When we talk about building handicap-accessible bathrooms we have to take into account everything. It’s not just about building a walk-in shower with handrails. If you want to add a raised toilet seat and you want to make sure that the room itself is easily accessible via a wheelchair we can make that happen for you. We’ve seen many jobs in the past where the shower is extended and there are handrails and everything, but essentially the person has to be carried into the bathroom because there is not enough room for the wheelchair to be maneuvered inside the bathroom area. That’s certainly something that we want to avoid. 

Optimal Use Of Space

We usually don’t want the phrase “optimal use of space” to mean get rid of your bathtub. Naturally, hot tubs in bathrooms tend to be one of the fixtures that take up the most space. Therefore, it’s not a wrong idea to want to consider removing them to make the space more accessible. In many ways, though these hot tubs can also benefit people with a wide variety of physical ailments. Walk-In Showers

A big part of creating handicap accessible rooms is adding space to the shower area. As we mentioned there are different ways that we’re going to be able to do this. In some cases what we’ll do is go ahead and remove existing fixtures and create a new shower from scratch. We’re going to be able to remove bathtubs and other fixtures if we have to. Disposing of any of the fixtures that we essentially take out is going to be part of our budget, so you won’t have to worry about disposing of anything.

Slip Proof Flooring 

One of the parts that we feel is super important in these types of bathrooms is the floors. We need to make sure that they are not slippery, but at the same time not as rough to the point where they are uncomfortable or make getting a wheelchair in there impossible.
